What To Expect

Itinerary
Barcis lake, Tibetan bridge, Vajont Dam, “Giaf” mountain lodge
Barcis, 33080 Barcis, Italia
In the morning individual arrival at Lake Barcis located in the heart of Valcellina, a few steps from the Natural Reserve “Forra del Cellina” and from Prescudin Forest. Time for a walk on the old road and crossing of the Tibetan Bridge (optional). In the early afternoon, guided tour of the Vajont Dam, built between 1957 and 1960 in the municipality of Erto and Casso. This dam is sadly known for the disaster of 9th October 1963, when a landslide of Mount Toc fell into the basin making it overflow and flooding the village of Longarone, in the province of Belluno, causing over 1900 deaths.
At the end of the visit transfer to Forni di Sopra. Leave your vehicles and walk to Rifugio Giaf in 45 minutes. Dinner and Overnight stay.
From the mountain lodge “Giaf” to the mountain lodge “Flaiban-Pacherini”
SS52 Località Chiandarens, 33024 Forni di Sopra, Italia
The crossing of the mountain lodge “Flaiban-Pacherini” takes place along the enchanting Truoi dei sclops, the so-called “Path of the gentians”. This path is an a continuous succession of environments and eye-catchers, and crosses the Urtisiel mountain pass, the wide plateau with the cheese hut Valmenon, the Canpuròs (the fairy-tale alpine prairie that during summer flowering makes it a dream place to stop), the mountain passes of Brica and Inferno, descending into the upper Val di Suola. Difference in height of 1000 meters, about 6 hours, level of difficulty E according to the Italian Alpine Club (CAI) (E= Hiking trail).
Trail sign CAI n. 361 (up to Valmenon), 369 (up to Passo del Mus), 362. Overnight stay at the Flaiban-Pacherini mountain lodge.
From the mountain lodge Flaiban-Pacherini to the mountain lodge Pordenone
Localita' Val Di Suola, 33024 Forni di Sopra, Italia
From the mountain lodge you go up to Passo di Suola, you cross the mountain passes of Rua Alta and Pramaggiore (there’s the chance to ascent to the summit of Monte Pramaggiore 2478 meters, the highest and most panoramic of the group), then you will go downhill to the bucolic Val dell’Inferno and to Val Postagae at the mountain lodge Pordenone. Uphill climb of 800 meters, about 5-6 hours, level of difficulty EE (for experienced hikers). For the top of the Pramaggiore there are passages of Ist grade*.
Trail sign CAI n. 363, 366 and 362. Alternatively, you can climb to the Mus Pass and descend directly to the mountain lodge Pordenone, through Val di Guerra and Val Postagae. Difference in height of 500 meters, 4 hours, difficulty E. Trail sign CAI n.362. from the Mus Pass for expert hikers it is possible to do a digression to the Torrione Comici for the daring Cassiopesa via ferrata (necessary via ferrata set, you need to consider 2 hours more) overnight at Rifugio Pordenone.

*I = First Grade - It is the simplest form of climbing: you must frequently use your hands to maintain balance and it requires a prior assessment of the quality of the rock before putting your foot on it.

From the mountain lodge Pordenone to the mountain lodge Padova
Pian Meluzzo, 33080 Cimolais, Italia
The crossing to the Padova mountain lodge takes place along the famous Montanaia valley towards the Montanaia saddle, passing at the base of the extraordinary Campanile di Val Montanaia, the one that is well-known by the mountaineers from all over the Europe as “grido di pietra” (“stone cry”). This itinerary is considered quite tiring but in a great environment. After passing the Montanaia saddle you will descend through the Val d’Arade up to the large meadow of the mountain lodge Padova. Difference in height of 1100 meters, about 5 hours, difficulty EE (experienced hikers). CAI trail sign 353 up to Val d’Arade, then 342 and 346. To avoid the steep descent from Montanaia saddle, there’s an alternative ascent to the Monfalcon valley of Cimoliana and the descent in Val d’Arade up to Monfalcon saddle of Forni. But choosing this alternative path will mean give up seeing the Campanile. CAI sign path n. 349. Overnight stay at the mountain lodge Padova.
From the mountain lodge Padova to the mountain lodge Giaf
Localita' Val Di Toro, 32040 Calalzo di Cadore, Italia
From the mountain lodge Padova you will enter the heart of Monfalconi mountain group thanks to a spectacular crossing of two high saddles, the Monfalcon saddle of Forni and the Cason saddle. Moreover, you will have the chance to overcome that magical rocky amphitheater where it rises, in total solitude, the red metal structure of the bivouac Marchi-Granzotto.
Difference in height of 1100 meters, about 6 hours, difficulty EE (experienced hikers). CAI trail sign 342.
As an alternative (or for those who had already passed in the previous day the Monfalcon Pass of Forni) you can more comfortably climb to the Scodavacca saddle, where you will find yourself in the beautiful landscape of the Dolomites and from here you will descend briefly to the Giaf mountain lodge, along the direct path and then you reach the locality of Forni di Sopra.

Additional Info

You can decide to start from any of the Refuges indicated, we recommend making the crossing clockwise. The proposed Trekking accompanied by a Mountain Guide, provides for the first stage to the mountain lodge “Giaf”, with the first part of the day dedicated to the visit of the Vajont Dam and the Barcis Lake to be carried out independently. For this trek from refuge to refuge it is good to have a good resistance to overcome in a single day a difference in altitude of a thousand meters carrying the backpack. While doing the mountain ring it is not necessary mountaineering equipment, it is sufficient a certain safety on screes, and narrow paths and not easy (are still possible easier variants).
